In an unprecedented step towards protecting public health, the Maldives has announced the implementation of a law banning smoking for all born on or after January 2007. This generation will be the first in the country's history to be completely prohibited from purchasing, using, or selling tobacco products.
The initiative, launched by President Mohamed Muizzu at the beginning of this year and effective from November 1, 2025, aims to build a tobacco-free generation and reduce the health burden from smoking-related diseases.
The Maldives Ministry of Health stated in a press release, "any person born after this date will not be permitted in the future to trade in or use tobacco products within the Maldives," noting that the regulation applies to both residents and visitors.
Furthermore, the ministry has mandated retailers to verify the age of buyers before completing any sale.
